Feline Immunodeficiency Virus : AIDS pada kucing

Salah satu virus yang ditakuti manusia adalah HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) yang menyebabkan berbagai penyakit akibat hilangnya kekebalan tubuh yang sering disebut AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Penyakit yang serupa juga dapat menyerang kucing, tetapi disebabkan virus lain yang disebut Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Tapi jangan takut, Kucing tidak dapat tertular HIV dari manusia, sebaliknya manusia pun tidak dapat tertular FIV dari kucing.

Sepertihalnya HIV pada manusia, sampai saat ini belum ada obat yang dapat menyembuhkan kucing yang positif terkena FIV. Kucing yang terinfeksi FIV juga dapat hidup bertahun-tahun hingga sedikit-demi sedikit kekebalan tubuhnya melemah dan akhirnya mati karena berbagai penyakit.

FIV terdapat diseluruh dunia dan sekitar 1.5 – 3 % kucing di USA terinfeksi penyakit ini. Dan sekitar 5% kucing yang positif FIV juga menderita penyakit Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).

Resiko Terinfeksi FIV

Kucing yang sering berkeliaran di luar rumah mempunyai resiko terkena FIV lebih tinggi dari pada kucing yang hidup di dalam rumah, begitu pula kucing jantan yang agresif dan sering berkelahi lebih mudah terinfeksi.

Penularan Penyakit

FIV terutama ditularkan melalui luka gigitan. Induk bunting yang terinfeksi juga dapat menulari anaknya pada saat masih di dalam rahim. FIV hanya menulari kucing dan tidak dapat mempengaruhi manusia.

Apakah bisa disembuhkan ?

Seperti juga HIV pada manusia, sampai saat ini belum ditemukan obat yang benar-benar efektif melawan FIV. Umur kucing yang terinfeksi FIV bervariasi tergantung kekebalan tubuh tiap individu. Lebih dari 50 % kucing yang terinfeksi tidak menunjukkan gejala sakit sedikit pun selama beberapa tahun. Sekitar 20 % kucing yang terinfeksi FIV mati dalam waktu 2 tahun. Umumnya kucing mati dalam waktu 4-6 tahun setelah virus masuk dan menginfeksi tubuh.

Tindakan bagi kucing yang terinfeksi

Karena tidak ada obat yang dapat menyembuhkan penyakit ini, seluruh tindakan bertujuan mencegah infeksi sekunder lain dan mencegah penyebaran penyakit. Kucing yang positif terinfeksi sebaiknya diisolasi dan jauhkan dari kucing lain.

Pencegahan

Sampai saat ini vaksin FIV belum ditemukan, oleh karena itu semua tindakan pencegahan bertujuan mengurangi resiko penularan dengan cara : mengurangi sifat agresif kucing jantan dengan kebiri, kandangkan kucing di dalam rumah, jaga kebersihan dan kesehatan kucing dengan vaksinasi teratur dan nutrisi yang baik.
